A three-channel video installation exploring the life and legacy of jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden, blending history, myth, and sound.

Precarity (2017) is a three-channel video installation by British-Ghanaian artist John Akomfrah, commissioned for the 2017 Prospect.4 Triennial in New Orleans. The work delves into the enigmatic life of Buddy Bolden, widely regarded as the founder of jazz, whose career ended abruptly when he was institutionalized in 1907. Utilizing archival materials, reconstructed scenes, and a dynamic soundscape, Akomfrah crafts a poetic narrative that intertwines Bolden's story with the cultural and environmental backdrop of New Orleans. The installation was later acquired by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, where it was showcased from March to September 2018.
