An immersive six-channel video installation by John Akomfrah, exploring climate change's impact on humanity and the environment.
Purple (2017) is a 62-minute immersive video installation by British-Ghanaian artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah. Presented across six screens, the work combines archival footage with newly shot film and a hypnotic sound score to address climate change's effects on human communities, biodiversity, and the wilderness. Filmed in locations such as Alaska, Greenland, Tahiti, and the Marquesas Islands, Purple is divided into five interwoven movements, offering a poetic meditation on the Anthropocene. Commissioned by the Barbican Centre in London, the installation has been exhibited internationally, including at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C.
