A 53-minute, three-screen film installation that immerses viewers in a surreal, post-apocalyptic Greek airfield, blending themes of empire, memory, and displacement.
The Airport (2016) is a three-channel HD video installation by British artist and filmmaker John Akomfrah. Set in an abandoned airfield near Athens, the 53-minute film features enigmatic characters—including a spaceman, a tuxedo-clad elderly man, and a wandering astronaut—navigating the desolate landscape. Drawing inspiration from filmmakers Stanley Kubrick and Theo Angelopoulos, Akomfrah employs long tracking shots and a haunting soundtrack to evoke a sense of temporal dislocation. The work meditates on the legacies of empire and the psychological traces left in spaces of human ruin and natural beauty.
